Fatal Motorcycle Crash Statistics

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycles are involved in 11% of all traffic accidents in the US. There were 4,985 motorcycle fatalities and 82,000 injuries in 2018.

This statistic is not surprising given that riders have a 16 times higher risk of suffering severe or fatal injuries in a car accident than passengers in enclosed vehicles.

Nearly two-thirds of all motorcycle accidents, or the majority of accidents involving motorcycles, happen at intersections. Motorcycle collisions occur more frequently than those involving other vehicles because of their smaller size.

The majority of California’s highways can be found on motorcycleroads.com’s list of the top 100 motorcycle roads. California is one of the states with the most number of motorcycles registered. The state is home to roughly 800,000 motorcycles.

The risk of severe head trauma has been shown to decrease with the use of helmets. Estimates show that wearing a helmet reduces the risk of dying while riding a motorcycle by 37%. The rest of their bodies, however, might still be in danger.

Motorcycle accidents are caused by speeding, careless driving, driving while intoxicated or high, driving in bad weather, driving the wrong way, and breaking traffic laws.
