Fatal Pedestrian Crash Statistics

If a pedestrian is struck by a car, they almost always suffer life-threatening injuries. In a crash involving a vehicle and a group of pedestrians, most casualties will be pedestrians.

The prevalence and severity of pedestrian injuries and fatalities in the United States have been rising for some time. The increasing number of pedestrian fatalities is a severe problem that has arisen in recent years.

Between 2007 and 2016, the number of people killed in traffic accidents fell by 14%. A study by the Governors Highway Safety Association found that, despite these improvements, pedestrian fatalities rose by 27% over the same period (GHSA).

The estimated number of pedestrian deaths in the United States in 2016 was 5,977. In late 2016, it was projected that 88 people would die every minute. At least 137,000 people in 2017 were injured while walking and required medical attention at an emergency room.

According to the statistics, California has the highest pedestrian injuries and deaths rate. There were 893 pedestrian deaths and over 14,000 injuries in California in 2012.

Sadly, pedestrian deaths and injuries are typical of drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians or brake suddenly. A competent attorney should be sought out and retained immediately upon receipt of a court summons.
