[11-01-2022] Santa Barbara County, CA- A 6-Year-Old Died and Three Other People Suffered Critical Injuries On Highway 101 at GaviotaAccording to local news, a 6-year-old boy died and was included in the four people extricated after a fatal vehicle crash in Gaviota on Tuesday night, November 1, 2022.

The crash transpired around 7:40 p.m. on northbound Highway 101 just north of the tunnel.

According to authorities, Javier G., 31, of Santa Maria, was operating a 2003 Nissan Frontier when he lost control of the vehicle and slid off the road, flipping it over.

Between the northbound and southbound lanes, the Nissan Frontier veered 25 to 30 feet off the road and ended up on boulders in the creek.

According to authorities, firefighters freed up four people, including a woman with severe injuries and two children in critical condition.

A third passenger, Sonia G., 31, of Santa Maria, along with two boys—one of whom had internal injuries—were also transported to a Hospital.

Emergency dispatch reports claim there was poor visibility in the area on Tuesday night. On Wednesday, the CHP verified that it was raining when the accident occurred.

While emergency personnel remained on the scene, Caltrans crews were sent to handle the closure of the northbound lanes in the area. The CHP reported that the closure lasted five hours.

According to the CHP, neither alcohol nor drugs were to blame for the accident.

Investigating the cause is still ongoing.
