Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Motorcyclists are among the most at-risk drivers on the road. Although motorcycles make up only a small percentage of vehicles, riders face a much higher chance of being involved in fatal crashes compared to people in passenger cars.

In 2021, motorcycles represented just 3.5 percent of all registered vehicles and less than 1 percent of total miles traveled in the United States. Despite this, motorcyclists accounted for 13.8 percent of all traffic deaths that year. Across the country, 5,932 riders were killed in crashes, including 565 fatalities in California.

That same year, motorcycle deaths rose by 7.7 percent nationwide and by 2.9 percent in California. These numbers show that riding remains one of the most dangerous forms of transportation, underscoring the ongoing need for safety awareness and responsible driving from everyone on the road.
