Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

A report released by the Governors Highway Safety Association estimates that 7,485 pedestrians were killed by vehicles in 2021, which is a record high for the past 40 years.

Speeding was responsible for 8.6% of pedestrian deaths in 2020, up from 7.2% in 2019. Speed is critical to pedestrian safety. A pedestrian’s death risk increases exponentially with vehicle speed, from 10% at 23 mph to 90% at 58 mph.

The injuries sustained by pedestrians when hit by vehicles are almost always severe. An accident involving a car and pedestrians will significantly injure most of them.

Failure to yield to pedestrians or braking too suddenly is one of the leading causes of pedestrian injuries and fatalities.

It is advised that pedestrians always use sidewalks, abstain from drinking or using drugs while walking, and proceed with caution when crossing parking lots or driveways. Thus, they will be less likely to sustain injuries in these collisions.
