Two people, one being a CHP employee, were injured after getting struck by a vehicle in Lakeside near El Cajon on Friday morning, November 18, 2022.
According to Officer Jared Grieshaber of the California Highway Patrol, the crash transpired at 10:10 a.m. on the south side of Olde Highway 80, east of Lake Jennings Park Road.
The victims were a 57-year-old civilian CHP employee and a 62-year-old trucking company civilian representative named Timothy M., a Fallbrook resident.
A 2007 green Toyota Camry going east veered off the road and hit both pedestrians while they were conducting a vehicle safety inspection on the wide shoulder of the roadway.
Mattison and the CHP worker both had serious wounds when brought to Sharp Memorial Hospital.
Hector R., 66, of Descanso, who was driving the Camry, remained at the scene of the collision and cooperated with the investigation.
What led Ramos to drift out of his lane is unclear to the authorities. It has not yet been determined whether drunk driving contributed to the collision.
Pedestrian Accident Statistics
According to data published by the Governors Highway Safety Association, traffic fatalities fell by 14% between 2007 and 2016. However, the number of pedestrian deaths rose by 27% over that time.
These statistics show that pedestrian injuries and fatalities have risen steadily over the past few years in the United States.
Five thousand nine hundred seven people in the United States were killed in vehicle-related accidents in 2016. Close to the year’s conclusion, it was calculated that 88 people were dying every minute. Approximately 137,000 persons in 2017 required medical attention due to an injury related to a car accident.
There were 893 fatalities and nearly 14,000 injuries in California in 2012. According to several studies, this puts the state at the top of the list for having the highest rate of pedestrian deaths and severe injuries.
