The CHP said one person died and several others were hurt following a head-on collision between two cars in Cajon Pass on Saturday morning, November 19, 2022.
According to California Highway Patrol, the crash caused by a wrong-way driver occurred at 1:13 a.m. on the 15 Freeway southbound lanes between Oak Hill and Highway 138.
The CHP incident logs reported a gray sedan traveling north in the southbound lanes and the center barrier at high speed.
The wrong-way vehicle eventually slammed head-on with a van driven by a male driver with several children passengers.
A small fire broke out in the van, but onlookers were able to put it out and provide aid to the injured while waiting for the responders.
Emergency responders declared the van driver dead on the spot. One individual was reported with major injuries, while four sustained minor wounds. It was unclear who was injured on those involved in the crash.
The collision caused all lanes of the southbound I-15 freeway to be temporarily closed for more than an hour. According to reports, some drivers fell asleep in their cars while waiting.
The California Highway Patrol is in charge of conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.
