Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics

According to the NHTSA, more than 5.2 million car accidents were reported in the US in 2020. Of those collisions, more than 30% (1.6 million) caused injuries, while less than 1% (35,766) caused fatalities.

Trends show that fatal crashes increased by 6.8% from 2019 to 2020, and the fatality rate rose to 1.34 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles in 2020. In 2020, there were 79 injuries per 100 million miles driven by vehicles, a 6% drop from 2019.

Sixty-seven percent of those killed or seriously hurt in car accidents are drivers, followed by 24% of passengers, 4% of motorcycle riders, 3% of pedestrians, and 2% of cyclists on pedals.

When three or more drivers are involved, a multiple-vehicle collision occurs for various reasons. Following an accident, up to six cars may become entangled in the wreckage.

Unlike traffic accidents, multi-vehicle collisions frequently result in fatalities, serious injuries, and property damage. Anyone nearby could suffer if you lose control or are unaware of your surroundings. Such collisions are more likely to occur in the majority of circumstances.
