Pedestrian Accident Statistics

When hit by a car, a pedestrian almost always sustains life-threatening injuries, if not death. They are almost always the ones who are hurt or killed in case of a traffic-related accident.

The rate of pedestrian deaths and injuries in the United States has been rising steadily over the past few years, and the severity of these incidents has also increased. This increase in pedestrian fatalities and injuries is, in fact, alarming.

According to a report by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), the number of traffic fatalities as a whole decreased by 14% between 2007 and 2016. The worst part is that the number of pedestrian fatalities increased by 27%.

In 2016, 5,977 people died in the United States due to such accidents. Estimates put the number of deaths at 88 per minute. Additionally, more than 137,000 visits to hospital emergency rooms in 2017 were due to pedestrian injuries.

Data analysis shows California has the highest pedestrian fatalities and severe injuries rate. In 2012, 893 pedestrians were killed, and over 14,000 were injured in the golden state.

Pedestrian deaths and injuries are a tragic byproduct of drivers failing to yield to pedestrians or braking too suddenly. If you want to go to court as a victim, you should definitely talk to an attorney first.
