Motorcycle Collision Statistics
Motorcycle accidents are a serious problem in the United States. More than 5,000 people are killed in motorcycle accidents each year, and many more are injured. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists are about 26 times more likely to die in a crash than car passengers.
There are many reasons for these statistics. Motorcycles are much smaller and lighter than cars, so they are less visible to other drivers and are more prone to being hit. They also offer less protection in a crash. In addition, motorcyclists are not required to wear helmets in most states, which can lead to serious head injuries in a crash.
Most of these accidents occur because the driver fails to see the motorcycle and turns in front of it. Other common causes of motorcycle accidents include speeding, reckless driving, and alcohol use.
Motorcyclists are also at risk of severe injuries in an accident because a car’s frame does not protect them. Road hazards such as potholes or gravel can cause motorcyclists to lose control and crash.
Due to the high fatalities and injuries, motorcyclists must take precautions while riding. Wearing a helmet is the most important safety measure a motorcyclist can take, followed by using bright colors to make the motorcycle more visible to drivers. Riders should also avoid driving and never drink and ride in bad weather conditions.
