Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics
A multi-vehicle collision occurs when three or more vehicles collide on the road. They are commonly caused by “chain-reaction” crashes, in which two cars collide, leading to further collisions with other vehicles on the road.
Tens of thousands of drivers and passengers are killed in vehicle accidents on American roadways each year, and millions of people are wounded. According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the US Department of Transportation, 33,654 fatal vehicle crashes occurred in 2018 and left 36,560 dead.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTS), less than 10% of crashes in any given year include more than one vehicle. However, they result in a disproportionate number of fatalities.
Accidents in cars can have devastating and life-altering effects. Because vehicle accidents are so common in our lives, most drivers are unaware of how hazardous they may be and how easily serious or even deadly ones can happen.
