Big Rig Accident Statistics

Big rig refers to the large tractor-trailers and semis that we frequently share the road with. Both of these terms refer to very large trucks used for transporting goods.

Tractor-trailer accidents have a higher fatality rate than other types of car crashes. The primary cause of this is the enormous size of semi-trucks and other big rigs. It takes more time to stop a semi-truck carrying a lot of cargo.

One person in the United States is killed in a collision involving a semi-truck every 15 minutes. It is estimated that 5,000 truck drivers are killed annually in the United States, roughly 500,000 transportation accidents.

Approximately 113 people per year lose their lives, and nearly 3,000 are injured due to truck accidents in California. Every year in California, two hundred and three hundred people are killed in truck accidents.

Deaths caused by semi-truck accidents reached a new high between 2009 and 2015, the most recent year for which data is available. In 2015, 11% of traffic fatalities involved a tractor-trailer.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration suggests giving yourself 4 seconds of space when following a heavy truck going less than 40 miles per hour. Over forty miles per hour necessitates an additional second.
