Fatal Hit-And-Run Accident Statistics
A recent analysis found that the number of hit-and-run fatalities is rising. In 2020, hit-and-run accidents were the cause of 24% of all pedestrian fatalities.
Recent studies have shown that California has the highest risk of pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries compared to other states. Approximately 893 pedestrians died, while over 14,000 were injured in California in 2012.
When a vehicle collides with another but leaves the scene without stopping to render aid, the collision is known as a hit-and-run (this includes drivers fleeing the scene on foot). In addition to the suffering and social and economic costs associated with injury crashes, hit-and-run incidents can worsen outcomes because victims are frequently delayed or do not receive medical attention.
Pedestrians have been involved in more accidents and fatalities in recent years. Deaths relative to this accident have been alarmingly high for some time.
Failure to yield to pedestrians or braking too suddenly is one of the main causes of pedestrian fatalities and injuries. To lessen their risk of injuries in these collisions, pedestrians should use sidewalks whenever possible, refrain from using drugs and alcohol while walking, and proceed with caution when crossing parking lots or driveways.
