The Sonoma police reported a bicyclist getting injured in a hit-and-run collision with a truck in Sonoma on Monday evening, November 7, 2022.
According to Sonoma Police Sgt. Scott McKinnon, the collision occurred at 8:22 p.m. at the Fifth Street West and McArthur intersection.
The crash involved a black truck hitting the back tire of a bicycle, injuring the rider’s knee. The victim lost sight of the truck as it proceeded to travel north on Fifth Street West.
She rode back home, where her mother took her to Sonoma Valley Hospital to receive medical attention. While at the hospital, the victim and her mother called the police.
The victim simply gave general information by describing the car as a big, black truck. McKinnon claimed that the collision qualified as a felony hit-and-run.
The investigation continued, and anyone with information was urged to call the police.
Bicycle Accident Statistics
Bicycles are becoming more popular in the US to have fun, get around, and get in shape. Even though the country has laws to protect cyclists, accidents still happen.
In 2018, more than 800 cyclists were killed in accidents nationwide. Despite the 12% fewer bicycle accidents than in 2001, more people have died. The National Center for Health Statistics says that 712 bikers were killed by cars, and 377 died of other causes.
Statistics show that California has the most bicycle-related deaths in the country. The National Bicycle Safety Foundation says that in 2017, 145 cyclists were killed, and 11,116 were hurt in California.
Riders are often in danger of a few things on the road. Drivers usually ride too close to cyclists, even when dangerous, and don’t care about their rights. Because of this, there could be accidents or even deaths.
Failure to give the right of way is a common reason people speed, run red lights and stop signs, and don’t pay enough attention to the road. Drunk or careless driving can also lead to a terrible bicycle accident.
