Truck Accident Statistics
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics show that large trucks were only accountable for 3.8% of injuries and 5% of property damage in 2010, but 8.9% of fatal crashes involved them. In fatal collisions involving large trucks, 64.6% were combination trucks.
Large truck-related fatal collisions plague American highways and roads frequently. Compared to other types of traffic collisions, fatalities in tractor-trailer accidents happen more often because of the size difference between a tractor-trailer and a passenger car.
A “large truck” weighs more than 10,000 pounds, excluding buses and recreational vehicles. Both noncommercial and commercial vehicles fall under this category of cars.
Large truck collisions typically result in fatalities among passengers. Passengers in smaller vehicles are at risk of being harmed.
Trucks can underride smaller vehicles and weigh 20 to 30 times as much as passenger cars. They also have greater height and ground clearance.
