Fatal Hit-And-Run Collision Statistics
Accidents involving and killing pedestrians have increased in recent years. The number of fatalities among pedestrians has been alarmingly high each year.
A survey indicates that the number of fatal hit-and-run incidents has increased. Recent studies have shown that California has the highest rate of pedestrian deaths and serious injuries compared to other states.
More than 14,000 pedestrian injuries and 893 fatalities occurred in California in 2012. In 2020, there were 24% more hit-and-run pedestrian fatalities than in 2019.
During a hit-and-run accident, one of the vehicles speeds away from the scene without stopping to help the injured party (including drivers fleeing the scene on foot). In addition to the suffering and social and economic costs linked to injury crashes, hit-and-run injuries can worsen outcomes because victims are frequently delayed or do not receive medical attention.
Pedestrians are always advised to use the sidewalks, abstain from drinking or using drugs while moving about, and cross parking lots and driveways with caution. As a result, they will be less likely to suffer injuries in these collisions.
