Authorities said a 55-year-old motorcyclist driving on the wrong side was killed in a car crash in San Diego on Monday evening, December 05, 2022.
According to the San Diego Police Department, the fatal crash occurred around 6:45 p.m. on Torrey Pines Road near La Jolla Village Drive.
The victim was traveling south on a Triumph motorcycle when for some reason, he drifted into the northbound side and slammed into a Toyota 4Runner. The two vehicles then caught fire after the motorcycle went on top of the SUV.
The rider, whose identity was withheld, passed away on the spot. The car driver and their passenger were unharmed.
The accident is still being looked into.
Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics
The National Safety Council found that motorcycle riders were to blame for 14% of traffic fatalities in 2020, 18% of occupant fatalities, and 4% of occupant injuries despite accounting for only 3% of registered cars and 0.6% of vehicle kilometers driven. Wearing a helmet can reduce these fatalities.
The incidence of deaths per 100 million car kilometers increased by 23% in 2020 compared to 2019. The death rate has increased by 27% over the past decade, while the overall death toll has risen by 20%. There are currently 5,579 deaths for every 100,000 kilometers driven (a rate of 31.64).
California has the most motorbike registrations in the country, with 785,424 in total. Nearly 88% of all traffic fatalities and injuries in the state involve motorcyclists. Accidents in which no helmet was worn account for only roughly 6% of these losses.
The data support our hypothesis that recovering from a motorcycle accident is more challenging than recovering from an automobile accident. It’s safer and easier to drive a four-wheeled car than a two-wheeled one. Consider the specialized abilities needed for safe motorcycle riding.
