Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics
Even if strict regulations are put in place to protect cyclists, they may still be injured or killed in the United States. About 800 bicyclists died throughout the country last year. Most of these deaths occurred in the Golden State of California.
In 2018, there were 50,000 fewer recorded bicycle accidents in the United States. Worldwide, the number of bicycle accidents decreased by 12% in 2001, although fatalities increased.
At 4.4 per 100,000 residents, California has the highest rate of fatalities involving bicycling of any state in the country. In 2017, there were 145 fatalities and 11,116 injuries involving bicycles in California, according to the National Bicycle Safety Foundation.
There are a number of risks involved in regular riding. When motorists routinely ignore posted speed limits and pass bicycles at unsafe distances, the safety of everyone on the road is compromised. As a result, there is a greater potential for harm, including fatality.
