Pedestrian Accident Statistics
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 4,000 pedestrians are killed in traffic accidents yearly in the United States. That averages out to one pedestrian being killed every two hours. And while pedestrian fatalities account for only 3% of all traffic deaths, they represent a growing portion of total traffic fatalities.
Orange County has maintained a high rate of pedestrian accidents. Thousands of pedestrians are seriously injured or killed in accidents resulting from other drivers’ recklessness. 994 pedestrians were injured or killed in traffic accidents in 2017.
Pedestrian deaths have increased by 27% since 2009. There are many reasons for this increase, but one of the most significant is the sharp rise in distracted driving. With more and more drivers using their cell phones behind the wheel, it’s no wonder that pedestrian accidents are on the rise.
Another factor is the increasing popularity of SUVs and other large vehicles. Because these vehicles are taller and heavier than passenger cars, they’re more likely to inflict serious injuries in a collision with a pedestrian. As a result, it’s important for both drivers and pedestrians to be aware of the dangers on the road. By paying attention and following traffic laws, we can help to reduce the number of pedestrian accidents each year.
