Workplace Accident Statistics
Workplace accidents can happen anywhere, at any time. Even the most safety-conscious workplaces are not immune to accidents. While some workplace accidents are minor and cause only temporary discomfort, others can be life-threatening.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 2.8 million non-fatal workplace accidents in 2017 alone. Of these accidents, nearly 600,000 resulted in days away from work, and over 200,000 resulted in job transfers or restrictions.
The best way to prevent workplace accidents is to be aware of the risks and take steps to mitigate them. Common causes of workplace accidents include slips, trips, and falls; exposure to hazardous materials; and repetitive motions.
Employees should also be trained in proper lifting techniques to prevent back injuries. To protect against exposure to hazardous materials, employees should wear appropriate protective gear and follow all safety procedures. And to avoid repetitive motion injuries, employers should provide ergonomic furniture and equipment and encourage employees to take breaks frequently. By taking these precautions, employers can help create a safe environment for their employees and help prevent workplace accidents.
