Vehicle Crash Involving Truck Statistics
Car crashes are common and can happen anywhere, but truck accidents are hazardous because of their size. Truck drivers have more responsibility than other drivers, so they must be cautious when they’re behind the wheel. If you’ve had an accident with a truck, it’s essential to know the statistics surrounding these types of crashes.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports about 4,000 deaths yearly from car crashes involving trucks. Additionally, about 80% of these accidents happen when the truck driver is not adequately trained to drive their vehicle or fails to follow safety guidelines and regulations.
The most common type of accident involves a passenger vehicle colliding with a tractor-trailer or semi-trailer truck. These collisions accounted for almost 40% of all fatal car accidents in 2017.
These accidents can happen anywhere, but they are most likely to occur on highways or intersections where multiple lanes of traffic merge.
The statistics clearly show an industry needing reform: more than one-third of all traffic fatalities are related to truck accidents. And while most people believe that these accidents are only standard on highways or interstates, they happen everywhere—including downtown areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.
