Car Accident Statistics
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 6.7 million car accidents in the United States in 2018. That’s an average of nearly 19,000 accidents per day. While some accidents are beyond our control, such as weather conditions or poorly maintained roads, many are preventable. Here are some of the most common causes of car accidents and what you can do to avoid them:
One of the most common causes of car accidents is speeding. When you exceed the posted speed limit, you increase your chances of being involved in an accident and the severity of the accident if one does occur. And while you might think that you’re a skilled enough driver to handle a little bit of extra speed, keep in mind that speeding also decreases your reaction time if something unexpected happens on the road. If you want to avoid being involved in a speeding-related accident, it’s best to adhere to the posted speed limit.
With the advent of smartphones, distracted driving has become more prevalent and dangerous than ever before. You’re putting yourself and others at risk if you send a text message, check social media, or even talk on the phone while behind the wheel. To avoid being involved in a distracted driving-related accident, put your phone away before getting behind the wheel and resist any temptation to use it while driving.
Another leading cause of car accidents is driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If you’re planning on drinking alcohol, have a designated driver or call a taxi or rideshare service to get home safely.
