Big Rig Accident Statistics

Big-rig refers to the large tractor-trailers and semis that we frequently share the road with. Large trucks that carry cargo go by either of these names.

When compared to other vehicle collisions, tractor-trailer collisions are the deadliest. The primary cause of this is the enormous size of semi-trucks and other big rigs. It takes more time to stop a semi-truck that is carrying a lot of cargo.

Every 15 minutes, one person in the United States is killed in a collision involving a semi-truck. It is estimated that 5,000 truck drivers are killed annually in the United States, roughly 500,000 transportation accidents.

Truck accidents in California account for about 113 annual fatalities and nearly 3,000 yearly injuries. Two hundred to three hundred people annually lose their lives in truck-related accidents in the Golden State.

Between 2009 and 2015, there was an all-time high number of deaths resulting from accidents involving semi-trucks. A tractor-trailer was involved in 11% of traffic fatalities in 2015.

When following a heavy truck going less than 40 miles per hour, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recommends drivers give themselves 4 seconds of space. An extra second is needed for speeds over 40 miles per hour.
