[09-23-2022] San Diego County, CA – 28-Year-Old Man Killed in Two-Vehicle Collision on Interstate 5 Freeway

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 23-year-old man walking within the lane of traffic on Interstate 5 was struck and killed by a vehicle in San Diego early Thursday morning, September 23, 2022.

The crash occurred at around 6:00 a.m. within the lanes of northbound I-5, south of Hawthorn Street on Interstate 5 in San Diego.

When the pedestrian was struck, he was walking within the lanes of northbound Interstate 5 south of Hawthorn Street. The silver Kia sport utility vehicle driver that hit the pedestrian was a man from San Diego who was 28 years old.

Officer Jesse Matias of the California Highway Patrol stated that the victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries and died. The driver of the Kia stayed behind after the collision to assist.

During approximately one hour of the investigation, lanes 4 and 5 were closed off to traffic. The driver of the Kia was not hurt, and there is no reason to believe that they were under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform a toxicology report to determine whether or not the pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The California Highway Patrol is looking into the collision.
