According to Amtrak, the crash involving Capitol Corridor occurred west of Oakland before the Oakland Coliseum station.

Train 521 was stopped and delayed for two hours and 15 minutes into Oakland Coliseum due to a collision with a vehicle that sustained major damages. Train 522 experienced delays as well.

There were injuries recorded, but the authorities did not release further details on both the car or the train’s occupants. The number of people involved and the extent of injuries were unknown.

Train Accident Statistics

The number of people killed on trains rose by 20% in 2016, from 744 to 893. In 2020 and 2021, there was a 4% increase, or 5780 more people, who experienced injuries classified as moderate to severe (5,544). In 2021, there was a 21% increase over the previous year in the number of fatalities at highway-rail grade crossings. By contrast, 617 pedestrians were killed the year before.

Fewer than a third of the injured passengers on the train have fully recovered. Some estimates placed the number of pedestrian fatalities in 2021 at 893, with 266 deaths attributable to train-pedestrian collisions.

The estimated number of injured commuters is 3,216. If these injuries are severe enough, they could be fatal. In 2015, sixty-six individuals were killed in the United States at railroad and highway grade crossings.
