Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to a report released by the Governors Highway Safety Association, 7,485 pedestrians were killed by vehicles in 2021, a record high for the last 40 years.

In 2020, speeding accounted for 8.6% of pedestrian fatalities, up from 7.2% in 2019. Speed plays a crucial role in pedestrian safety. The risk of death for a pedestrian increases exponentially with vehicle speed, from 10% at 23 mph to 90% at 58 mph.

Pedestrian accidents frequently have tragic outcomes. Pedestrians will likely suffer severe injuries if a collision occurs between two vehicles.

Pedestrian accidents are the leading cause of injuries and deaths on American roads. Accidents involving pedestrians have historically been the most dangerous.

It is advisable for pedestrians to always walk on the sidewalks, avoid drinking or using drugs while walking, and cross parking lots and driveways carefully. Therefore, they are less likely to suffer injuries in such collisions.

What Should I Do Following an Accident

Upon gathering information, it is advisable to file a police report, provided it is safe to do so. By doing so, the police can store information about what happened during an accident on a
central database, maintain those records within the police department, and ensure that the data is kept secure.

A police report can be filed via phone or in person if the police are not at the scene of the accident. When the police are not present at the location of the collision, they will collect the information themselves and prepare a police report later on.
