Fatal Truck Accident Statistics

Heavy trucks are relatively safer than passenger cars in collisions because trucks are structurally more robust. Therefore, more people die in car accidents involving large trucks than in incidents involving any other vehicle. The consequences of collisions involving these large trucks might be catastrophic.

In 2020, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that heavy truck accidents resulted in 4,965 fatalities across the United States. There was a 1% decrease from the total of 5,032 in 2019. People riding in smaller cars accounted for 71% of the fatalities caused by heavy trucks in 2020.

8.9% of all cars involved in fatal crashes in 2020 across the country were heavy trucks. Heavy truck accidents involving non-occupant vehicles were California’s leading cause of mortality (90). More than 50 people were killed in large truck accidents in only two other states outside California: Texas and Florida.
