Fatal Truck Collision Statistics

Truck collisions cause approximately 4,000 deaths in the United States each year. Accidents involving heavy vehicles account for only 2% of accidents but generate 11% of fatalities.

Over 28,000 truck-related accidents occur daily in California, according to the Office of Traffic Safety. In 2017, 359 people lost their lives, and 9,000 were injured in these crashes.

The state and federal governments have set a 55 mph speed limit for large vehicles in California. Reducing the permitted speed may prevent accidents involving semi-trucks.

Compared to drivers of other vehicles or pedestrians, truck drivers have a lower risk of injury in collisions because of the larger size and construction of a truck. The National Safety Council reports that pedestrians and drivers are most likely to die in these accidents. However, when two trucks collide, the harm and injuries may be more severe.
