A 20-year-old male pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle in Rancho Cordova on Monday evening, February 20, 2023.
The California Highway Patrol reported that the fatal crash occurred around 7:15 p.m. along the Highway 50’s eastbound lanes near Zinfandel Drive.
An unidentified vehicle was pulled over on the highway’s shoulder, said the officers. For reasons still under investigation, the man outside the car entered the traffic lanes and got struck by an oncoming red Toyota.
The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital in critical condition but was later declared dead. His identity has not yet been made public. It is yet unknown why he was on the highway’s shoulder and why he entered into the traffic.
The fatal collision impacted the traffic in the area, but by 8:15 p.m., all lanes had been restored. The investigation into the crash continued.
Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
The number of people killed in car accidents fell by 14% between 2007 and 2016, according to data provided by the Governors Highway Safety Association. Yet, there was a 27% increase in pedestrian fatalities despite these trends in the other direction. These numbers demonstrate how risky it is to stroll along U.S. roadways nowadays.
There were 5,977 pedestrian deaths in the United States in 2016. As that year came to a close, 88 individuals lost their lives per minute. In 2017, there were roughly 137,000 pedestrian injuries that required hospitalization.
Around 14,000 pedestrians were injured and 893 were killed in California in 2012. Many studies have found that this is the leading cause of death and injury among pedestrians in the state.
