What to Do After a Car Accident

You can’t predict when a car accident will occur, but you can take steps to prepare yourself. A checklist can help you stay composed in the event of a car accident. It can guide you on what to do, what to avoid, and how to protect your rights. You can follow these tips:

  • Stay Calm and do not admit fault. To ensure nobody is hurt, remain where you are. Before tending to others, you should make sure you’re not hurt.
  • Get to a Safe Location and wait for the authorities. Any vehicles that cannot move should be pulled to the side of the road. Please turn on your vehicle’s hazard lights as a safety measure.
  • Call 911 to report your collision. Call the police unless the accident was minor and caused no injuries or property damage. The police can gather information, interview witnesses, and write a report on the incident.
  • Exchange Information with all parties involved. You should note everything that happened, including how you hurt, the road conditions, and the car that hit you.
  • Do Not Admit Fault under any circumstances, even to the police. Tell the police officer nothing but the truth about what happened.
  • Seek Medical Attention. Get in touch with your primary care physician or a specialist right away. Injuries may be treated less severely if given prompt medical attention.
  • Report to Your Insurance Company. California’s statute of limitations for reporting an accident to your insurer varies by company.
  • Speak to Insurance Adjusters. You can communicate with the claims adjuster, but you should only reveal the required information. Before consulting with a lawyer, you should refrain from giving a recorded statement or accepting a settlement offer from an insurance company.
  • Create a File. Create a case file that includes the police report, medical bills, details about the other driver, and any proposed courses of treatment.
  • Seek immediate legal counsel from a renowned California car accident lawyer.
