[02-16-2024] Fresno County, CA – Injuries Reported Following Vehicle vs. Bus Collision Along Shields Avenue

Injuries were reported following a vehicle vs. bus collision in Fresno on Friday evening, February 16, 2024.

According to the Fresno Police Department, the crash happened at around 6:30 p.m. at the Shields and Cedar Avenues bus stop.

Authorities said that an SUV, for some reason, struck a parked FAX bus on its rear side and burst into flames. It was later found out that the SUV driver had a suspended license.

All of the passengers got off relatively safe, with some only reporting minor injuries.

What led to the incident is still unclear. Neither the exact number nor the current condition of the injured victims have been disclosed.

The investigation is in progress.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), 5,904 fatalities involved large trucks and buses in 2021, an 18% increase from 2020. There were 119,000 injuries recorded in the same year.

These fatalities specifically involved 80 school buses, 17 intercity buses, and 78 transit buses. Half of the vehicles were used for transporting students to and from school, while the other half carried commuters to and from work.

From the 164 fatalities in 2020, buses involved in fatal crashes increased to 204. These fatalities can occur when bus drivers are careless or don’t follow protocol.
