Car Accident Statistics

California continues to struggle with a high rate of car accidents, and Modesto is no exception. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) 2022 report shows that 2,066 people were killed or injured in traffic collisions in Modesto. This makes Modesto the first out of 61 similar cities for crash-related injuries and fatalities.

Among the leading causes of these accidents, alcohol-impaired driving played a significant role, with 277 victims—the highest in its category. Speeding contributed to 166 crashes, while nighttime accidents (9:00 PM–2:59 AM) led to 218 injuries or deaths, also ranking 1st in the state. Hit-and-run crashes were another serious issue, with 190 victims (3rd out of 61).

The dangers affect more than just drivers and passengers. In 2022, 81 motorcyclists, 100 pedestrians, and 82 bicyclists were injured or killed. Vulnerable groups, such as kids under 15 and seniors over 65, were affected, too. There were eight child pedestrians, 11 senior pedestrians, and 10 young bicyclists involved in crashes.

Modesto had 545 DUI arrests, but its crash rates show a need for better road safety. Stronger measures, awareness campaigns, and responsible driving habits are key to cutting down preventable accidents.
