Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Pedestrian accidents remain a pressing issue, particularly in California. Data from the California Office of Traffic Safety reveals a troubling trend: pedestrian fatalities in the state increased from 1,013 in 2020 to 1,108 in 2021—a 9.4% rise in just a single year.
Compounding this concern, Smart Growth America identified five metropolitan areas in California among the 20 most hazardous regions for pedestrians nationwide. Between 2018 and 2022, these areas recorded between 3 and 4 pedestrian deaths per 1,000 residents.
The situation at the national level is equally disturbing. In 2022, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 7,522 pedestrian fatalities and more than 67,000 injuries throughout the United States. These alarming figures underscore the critical need for enhanced pedestrian safety measures and robust legal advocacy for those affected.
