What To Do After Getting Injured In A Hit-And-Run Accident

Getting injured in a hit-and-run accident can be a stressful and confusing experience. It is common to feel overwhelmed, especially when the other driver leaves without taking responsibility. Taking a few practical steps can help you stay safe, protect important details, and prepare for what comes next.

Here are some actions to consider in this situation:

  1. Gather Information
If you are able, try to take note of details about the vehicle that hit you. This might include the make, model, color, or license plate number. Take photos of the accident scene, the vehicle if visible, your injuries, and any property damage. Even small details may be helpful later on.
  2. Contact The Police
Call law enforcement as soon as possible. A police report creates an official record of the accident, which can be helpful if you need to refer back to it. Once available, you can request a copy from the local police department or the California DMV.
  3. Look For Witnesses
If anyone saw the crash, ask for their names and contact information. Their statements may support your version of events and provide additional context that you may have missed.
  4. Seek Medical Attention
Even if you feel okay at the scene, get checked by a medical professional. Some injuries, such as internal trauma or soft tissue damage, may not show symptoms right away. Medical records also help document your condition after the crash.
  5. Report The Accident To Your Insurance Company
Let your insurance provider know about the incident and share the basic facts. Avoid speculating about fault or giving a recorded statement without understanding your rights. It is often best to take time before agreeing to any settlements or signing documents.
  6. Consider Legal Guidance
If you have questions about how to move forward, speaking with a legal professional may help clarify your options. An attorney can assist with organizing your case, reviewing your coverage, and helping you understand what steps to take next.
