Recommended Steps To Take After A Car Accident

If youโ€™ve been involved in a car accident, especially one involving multiple injuries, itโ€™s crucial to take the right steps to ensure your safety and protect your legal rights. Here are the recommended steps to take:

  1. Assess Injuries And Ensure Safety
After the accident, check yourself and others for injuries. If it’s safe, move to a secure area away from traffic. If anyone is injured, immediately call 911. Quick medical attention is essential, particularly if injuries are moderate or severe.
  2. Call Emergency Services
Itโ€™s important to contact the police regardless of the accidentโ€™s severity. Emergency responders will document the scene and create an official report, which is important for insurance claims and legal purposes. Theyโ€™ll also ensure that injured individuals receive timely medical assistance.
  3. Gather Essential Information
Exchange information with the other parties involved, including names, contact details, driverโ€™s license numbers, and insurance information. Document the accident scene by taking photos of the vehicles, damage, and injuries. This evidence is key for future claims and investigations.
  4. Seek Medical Care
Even if you don’t feel injured, it’s recommended to see a healthcare professional. Many injuries, such as whiplash or internal trauma, may not be immediately noticeable. Getting a proper medical evaluation creates a record of your injuries, which can be helpful for your case.
  5. Notify Your Insurance Provider
Inform your insurance company about the accident as soon as possible. However, itโ€™s best not to go into too much detail until youโ€™ve spoken with a lawyer, as the insurance company may try to minimize your claim.
  6. Consult With A Car Accident Lawyer
Itโ€™s recommended to contact a car accident lawyer after an accident involving injuries. A lawyer can help you understand your legal rights, assist with gathering evidence, and guide you through the claims process to ensure that your interests are protected.

Car Accident Statistics

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported on traffic fatalities for the first half of 2023. The data reveals a continued decrease in fatalities, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of improvement. During this period, an estimated 19,515 people died in motor vehicle crashes, representing a decline of approximately 3.3% compared to 20,190 fatalities in the first half of 2022.

This reduction in fatalities was observed in both the first and second quarters of 2023, indicating a steady trend in improving road safety. A significant factor contributing to this decline is the increase in vehicle miles traveled (VMT). In the first half of 2023, the total miles driven rose by 35.1 billion miles, or about 2.3%, compared to the same period the previous year. Despite the increase in travel, the number of fatalities continued to decrease.

As a result of these trends, the fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) has also decreased. The rate now stands at 1.24 fatalities per 100 million VMT, down from the projected 1.31 fatalities per 100 million VMT earlier in the year. This improvement signifies positive progress in road safety, suggesting that fewer fatalities are occurring as travel increases.
