[06-29-2025] Santa Barbara County, CA – Pedestrian Killed in Crash on Calle Real in Goleta

A woman was killed in a pedestrian crash in Goleta on early Sunday morning, June 29, 2025.

According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred just before 1:00 a.m. on Calle Real.

A 68-year-old Goleta woman driving in the area reportedly looked away from the road due to the glare of bright oncoming headlights and veered off the roadway, eventually coming to rest in a nearby field.

Deputies arriving at the scene found a female pedestrian lying off the road approximately 300 feet from where the vehicle had stopped. Emergency crews attempted life-saving measures, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigations suggest the driver was unaware she had struck the pedestrian until informed by deputies at the scene. Authorities stated that drugs or alcohol are not suspected to be factors in the crash.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. The investigation remains ongoing.

Sadly, one pedestrian loses their life every 72 minutes in a crash, and another is injured about every 7 minutes. By the end of the year, around 68,244 pedestrians were reported injured. This number was a little higher than in 2022, which had just over 67,000 injuries.

Pedestrian deaths made up 18 percent of all traffic-related fatalities in 2023. However, only 3 percent of all people injured in crashes were pedestrians.

Most fatal pedestrian accidents happen away from intersections. About 74 percent occurred outside of marked crosswalks, while 17 percent happened at intersections. The remaining 9 percent occurred in other areas.

Time of day also played a role. The majority of pedestrian deaths, about 77 percent, occurred at night. Only 19 percent happened during daylight hours. The rest happened at dawn or dusk.
