Steps To Take After A DUI Accident In San Diego

Being injured in a crash involving a suspected impaired driver can be traumatic and overwhelming. Victims often face medical concerns, disrupted routines, and uncertainty about what to do next. Taking certain steps after the accident may help support recovery and preserve important information for future use.

  1. Seek Immediate Medical Care
Even if injuries seem minor, it is important to be seen by a medical professional. Injuries such as fractures, joint damage, or internal trauma may not be fully understood without proper evaluation. Medical records can also help document the impact of the crash.
  2. Obtain A Copy Of The Police Report
When impairment is suspected, police often conduct a detailed investigation. Requesting a copy of the official report may provide insight into the events leading up to the crash and any charges that were filed.
  3. Preserve Any Evidence
If you are able, or if someone can assist you, try to gather photos of your injuries, vehicle damage, and the accident location. Keep track of medical bills, doctor visits, and missed work days. These details may become important when handling insurance or legal matters.
  4. Be Cautious With Insurance Communication
After the crash, you may be contacted by insurance adjusters. Avoid giving recorded statements or accepting any offers until you understand the full extent of your injuries and have received legal guidance.
  5. Speak With A DUI Accident Lawyer
A lawyer may help explain your rights and handle conversations with insurers or other parties involved. Legal professionals can also help identify sources of compensation and assist with paperwork related to medical treatment, recovery, and other accident-related expenses.

DUI Accident Statistics

In 2020, alcohol-related crashes caused 11,654 deaths in the United States. That number made up about 30 percent of all traffic deaths that year. Compared to 2019, the total number of deaths increased by over 14 percent.

On average, 32 people died each day in crashes that involved alcohol. This means there was one death every 45 minutes.

The cost of these crashes was also very high. In 2020, the total financial impact of alcohol-impaired driving deaths reached around 123.3 billion dollars. This amount includes medical expenses and the estimated value of the lives lost.

Driving under the influence of drugs also affects road safety. While exact numbers are harder to measure, one study looked at 4,243 seriously injured drivers who were treated in trauma centers between September 2019 and July 2021. More than half of them tested positive for alcohol, drugs, or both. The most common substances found were alcohol, marijuana, opioids, stimulants, and sedatives.

Crash statistics show that driving under the influence continues to play a role in many serious and fatal accidents. Learning about these risks helps raise awareness about how dangerous impaired driving can be.
