Car Accident Statistics

In the first half of 2023, about 19,515 people died in car accidents across the United States. This was a 3.3 percent drop from the same time in 2022, when there were 20,190 deaths. It also marked the fifth time in a row that traffic deaths went down.

Even though people drove more in 2023, there were still fewer deaths. Drivers traveled about 35.1 billion more miles compared to the previous year, which is a 2.3 percent increase in total miles driven.

Thanks to this improvement, the number of deaths for every 100 million miles driven was lower. In 2023, there were about 1.24 deaths per 100 million miles, which is better than the expected rate of 1.31 deaths.

These numbers show that road safety is improving, even as more people are back on the road.
