Car Accident Statistics
Traffic deaths in the United States had been declining for many years, largely due to advances in vehicle safety features such as seat belts, airbags, and stricter enforcement of impaired driving laws. However, this progress has slowed over the past decade.
In both 2020 and 2021, fatal crashes increased. In 2021, a total of 43,230 people lost their lives in motor vehicle accidents, including 7,388 pedestrians. The following year, in 2022, the number of fatalities dropped slightly to 42,514. Despite the decrease, this was still about 10 percent higher than the total reported in 2020.
These figures reflect the ongoing need for improved traffic safety measures and continued efforts to reduce the number of lives lost on U.S. roads.
