Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Motorcycle accidents remain a significant safety concern in the United States, as motorcyclists face a much higher risk of serious injury or death compared to other road users. Despite making up only a small portion of all vehicles on the road, motorcycles account for a disproportionate number of traffic-related fatalities and injuries.

In 2021, motorcyclists represented 13.8% of all traffic fatalities, although motorcycles made up just 3.5% of all registered vehicles and accounted for only 0.6% of total Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT). That year, 5,932 motorcyclists lost their lives nationwide, with California reporting 565 fatalities.

Motorcycle fatalities increased by 7.7% nationwide from 2020 to 2021, while California saw a 2.9% rise during the same period. These statistics emphasize the ongoing risks motorcyclists face, despite efforts to improve safety and reduce accidents.
