Car Accident Statistics

In 2023, an estimated 44,762 people died in motor vehicle crashes in the United States, a 3 percent decrease from 46,027 deaths in 2022. This follows a 2 percent decline from 2021, after traffic fatalities had risen 20 percent between 2019 and 2021.

Over the long term, fatality rates have improved significantly. In 1913, about 4,200 people died out of 1.3 million registered vehicles, a rate of 33 deaths per 10,000 vehicles. By 2023, with 285 million vehicles on the road, the fatality rate had dropped 95 percent to 1.57 deaths per 10,000 vehicles.

Several factors contributed to the decline in 2023. Total miles driven increased 1.6 percent, registered vehicles rose 0.4 percent, and the population grew 0.5 percent. Despite these increases, the risk of death per mile, per vehicle, and per person all fell. The mileage death rate dropped 4.2 percent, the vehicle death rate fell 3.1 percent, and the population-based death rate went down 3.2 percent.

While fatalities are declining, nonfatal injuries remain a serious concern. In 2022, roughly 5.1 million people were injured in motor vehicle crashes, resulting in estimated economic costs of $513.8 billion, including medical bills, lost income, property damage, and other expenses.
