Bicycle Accident Statistics
Each year, nearly 1,000 bicyclists die in crashes involving motor vehicles on U.S. roads. Beyond these fatalities, roughly 120,000 people are treated in emergency rooms annually for non-fatal injuries sustained in bicycle crashes.
While bicycle trips account for only about 1% of all travel in the country, bicyclists make up 2-3% of all motor vehicle-related fatalities. This indicates that, although cycling is a small portion of overall travel, it carries a comparatively higher risk of serious injury or death than many other modes of transportation.
