DUI Accident Statistics
Driving under the influence of alcohol remains a serious safety issue on U.S. roads. In 2023, the National Safety Council recorded approximately 12,429 deaths from alcohol-related crashes. This was a 7.6 percent decrease from 2022 and marked the second consecutive year of decline, showing some progress in reducing impaired driving.
A crash is classified as alcohol-impaired when at least one driver or motorcyclist has a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 grams per deciliter or higher. This level is the legal limit in most states, and exceeding it makes operating a vehicle both illegal and highly dangerous.
