Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Pedestrian safety remains a significant concern on U.S. roads. Thousands of people are killed each year, and many others suffer serious injuries. Several conditions can increase the likelihood of a pedestrian crash, including the speed of vehicles, the layout of the roadway, the type of vehicle involved, and whether alcohol was a factor.
In 2022, more than 8,000 pedestrians lost their lives in traffic crashes nationwide, which comes out to roughly one fatality every hour. During that same year, an estimated 140,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for non-fatal injuries. These deaths made up about 20 percent of all traffic fatalities, showing that people on foot continue to face significant risks on the road.
