[05-14-2026] Orange County, CA – Mobility Scooter Rider Killed, Driver Injured in Irvine Crash

An 87-year-old man riding a mobility scooter was killed, and a driver sustained injuries following a traffic collision in Irvine on Thursday night, May 14, 2026.

According to the Irvine Police Department, officers responded to the intersection of Irvine Boulevard and Groveland near the Stonegate and Woodbury communities after reports of a crash involving a Tesla SUV and a mobility scooter.

Authorities stated that the Tesla was traveling westbound on Irvine Boulevard with a green traffic signal, and that the man on the mobility scooter was crossing northbound in the crosswalk at Groveland when the collision occurred.

Emergency personnel from the Orange County Fire Authority and Irvine Police Department attempted life-saving measures, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.

The driver of the Tesla sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Officials stated that DUI is not believed to be a factor in the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing.
