A 10-year-old child was killed, and two other people were seriously injured in a head-on collision near Rancho Cordova on Wednesday morning, September 30, 2026.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after 8:00 a.m. on Mather Boulevard, south of Douglas Road.

CHP said a gray Hyundai Elantra was traveling southbound when it crossed the double yellow lines and collided head-on with a Chevrolet Equinox traveling northbound.

Three people were transported to hospitals with major injuries. Two were initially listed in critical condition, including the 10-year-old child, who later died. Authorities said the child was a student at Mather Heights Elementary School.

Investigators said the Hyundai may have been attempting to pass a slower-moving vehicle, but CHP has not confirmed that as the cause of the collision.
