An 18-year-old woman was killed following a deadly two-vehicle crash involving a suspected DUI driver in Hesperia on Monday evening, April 25, 2022.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 9:58 p.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Walnut Street in Hesperia.
A 2002 Dodge Ram collided with a 2005 Jeep Liberty. The 2005 Jeep Liberty was initially making a left turn from the westbound lanes of Main Street to the eastbound lanes of Walnut Street when the 2002 Dodge Ram crashed into the passenger side of the vehicle.
Due to the severity of the impact, the Jeep rolled over onto the driver’s side. Unfortunately, the 18-year-old female Jeep driver could not survive her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, the Dodge Ram driver and her 16-year-old and 17-year-old passengers were taken to an area hospital for treatment.
The Dodge Ram driver was later identified as 19-year-old Nicholas F. Authorities determined that he was under the influence at the crash. As soon as he was discharged from the hospital, he was booked into the High Desert Detention Center on the charge of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
Local authorities are further investigating the case. Witnesses that can give more information about the crash are urged to contact Deputy T Rogoff or Sgt. Brenden Motley at (760) 947-1500.
Fatal DUI Crash Statistics
Injuries or death can occur in any car accident. However, numerous incidents occur each day, some resulting in minor injuries and others more serious ones. Deaths and severe injuries are more common in DUI accidents than in other collisions.
NHTSA estimates that roughly 30 people are killed each day in drunk driving accidents. In the United States, drunk drivers are responsible for 29 percent of all traffic-related deaths.
According to the most recent data from the California Office of Traffic Safety, more than 16,000 people were killed in drunk driving accidents in California between 2015 and 2016.
Drunk drivers sometimes find it difficult to see clearly and react quickly to potentially dangerous circumstances because of their impairment. Driving at fast speeds and having a delayed reaction time causes them to touch the brakes less often than they should. Anybody or whatever stands in the path is severely impacted.
In California, there is a high frequency of DUI accident claims. Car crashes involving alcohol have resulted in 10 to 12 percent of all injuries, according to the California Department on Alcohol and Drug Programs. Furthermore, drivers aged 21 to 24 years old account for 35 percent of those detained for having a BAC over the legal limit.
