Fatal Motorcycle Crash Statistics

According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), 5,014 motorcyclists died in collisions in the United States last year. The number of motorcycle deaths had been declining since the early 1980s, but they began to rise again in 1998 and remained so until 2008.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycle riders are 16 times more likely to be injured and 35 times more likely to be killed in a collision than car passengers (NHTSA).

Under its ‘Top 100 Motorcycle Roads’ section, Motorcycleroads.com, an online resource for finding motorcycle routes, tours, and events, lists the most roads in California. In addition, the United States has the most registered motorcycles in the country. Nearly 800,000 motorcycles have been registered in the state.

Motorcycle accidents account for nearly 70% of all collisions, with vehicles failing to detect the motorcycle at intersections. Due to their low visibility, some drivers may have difficulty spotting motorcycles even during the day.

Reflective clothing is an excellent way to catch oncoming traffic’s attention. While some may consider this unfashionable, staying safe on the road is more important than making a statement with your driving style.
