The crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. near the community pool area of a gated residential community off Shadowridge Drive in Vista.

A deputy was hospitalized due to pool cleaning chemicals that leaked during the collision, forcing authorities to close the intersection until a hazardous materials crew could clean it up.

When deputies finally arrived, they discovered a man unconscious in the pickup’s driver’s seat.

They noticed what they believed illegal drugs in the center console and pool equipment in the truck bed.

They roused him, and he sped off in his car. The deputies hurriedly returned to their patrol car and began looking for him. They soon spotted him, activated their sirens and lights, and started pursuing him.

The fleeing pickup struck a traffic light pole about 20 seconds later on Cannon Road and Lake Boulevard in Oceanside, not far from the city’s border with Vista, according to Ford.

Deputies jumped out to rescue the man from the rubble, but the fumes from the pool chemicals that had spilled overwhelmed them.

According to Gregson, one deputy suffered inhalation injuries and was hospitalized.

Breathing equipment was required for Vista fire crews, according to Gregson. The man was removed from the wrecked truck by Vista fire crews, but he was already dead.

A chemical burn might not be considered a typical vehicle accident injury. Nevertheless, vehicles contain some caustic fluids that may leak following a collision, and those substances may be harmful to the occupants. Deployed airbags are a significant contributor to chemical burns following car accidents. A sodium hydroxide aerosol, which can burn skin, is released when an airbag deploys.

When you are in a car accident and come into contact with something foreign, try to get it off your skin as soon as possible. Of course, this might be difficult right after a collision, especially if you’ve suffered serious injuries.

Furthermore, some irritants or corrosives may be dense and challenging to remove. The sooner the substance can be removed, the better. First responders should have the necessary equipment to treat chemical burns. A more painful burn can happen if you let a caustic substance sit on your skin.
