Fatal Train Accident Statistics

There are fewer train accidents now, but they can still occur at any time. For example, the Amtrak derailment in Washington State or the pedestrian death that occurred earlier this year are just a few incidents that come to mind. Every year in the United States, hundreds of train accidents are reported. In 2021 alone, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) recorded over 8,000 train accidents.

There were 2,131 accidents involving cars and trains at grade crossings in 2020. In 2021, 237 people were killed, and 653 were injured while crossing the street in the United States. These states accounted for roughly 68% of all 2021 highway-rail grade crossing collisions.

Human factors, rather than track or equipment problems, were the most common cause of train accidents in 2018. Train accidents are often attributed to malfunctions in equipment or infrastructure because of the widespread belief that trains run mostly on autopilot.

Your life shouldn’t be put at risk by taking a bus, train, or trolley. However, cheap transportation options can lead to a lack of enforcement of rules and attention to safety. Public transportation drivers should receive extensive training prior to taking passengers.
